Warrior Day 1 Access Faculty Help Center

Welcome to the Warrior Day 1 Access program, designed to lower costs and provide course materials by the first day of class, ensuring students have the resources they need to succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How it works

After faculty members select the course material for their courses, the Wayne State Bookstore partners with publishers to negotiate a discounted price.

When a student registers for a class that utilizes the program, the course material charge is included in the student’s tuition and fees.

Students will receive a message in their Wayne State email (Ex. name@wayne.edu) from the bookstore before the term starts with additional details about their Warrior Day 1 Access classes or the following day if they register later for classes.

Most digital materials are made available to students on or before the first day of class via Canvas, but some publishers vary. Physical items can be obtained from the campus bookstore or by using the link within the email to select shipping (additional cost).

Benefits for Students:

  • Offers course materials at a lower cost than traditional methods

  • Materials are included in the cost of student tuition and fees, saving the student time from shopping for required materials

  • Access to course materials on the first day of class, increasing their ability to prepare and engage in their studies

  • Ability to pay for materials using financial aid or payment plans (available for limited time each term)
  • Increased success rates and improved academic performance due to timely and easy access to course materials

How to Setup My Warrior Day 1 Course Materials

Step 1
Verify the “Course Materials” tool is enabled in your Canvas course. If the "Course Materials" tool is not enabled, Instructors can add the Course Materials link to their course navigation menu by enabling the link from their course Settings page under the Navigation tab, as described in the Canvas documentation, How do I manage course navigation links.

Step 2
Make sure your courseware, such as Cengage Mindtap, Pearson Mylabs, or McGraw-Hill Connect, has been set up within Canvas.

Step 3
Add this information to your syllabus

This course section participates in Warrior Day 1 Access (WD1A), which means your required course materials are billed directly to your tuition and fees account. Your courseware will be delivered electronically through Canvas, so there is no need to visit the bookstore.

If your course requires any physical materials in addition to the digital courseware, you may order them from the bookstore at no additional cost.

In most cases, WD1A is the most affordable way to access required materials, but participation is optional. To opt out, log into Canvas, open the course you wish to opt out of, and select “Want to Opt Out” before the add/drop deadline. This process must be completed separately for each course. If you opt out, you will be responsible for obtaining your course materials on your own.

If you change your mind, you may opt back in at any time during the opt-out period by selecting “Opt In.”

For more information about WD1A, including FAQs and opt-out instructions, visit:

waynestatebookstore.com/pages/wsu-day-1-access-1.

Step 4
Discuss WD1A with your students on the first day of classes and explain how they can access their course materials.

FAQs

How are course materials delivered through Warrior Day 1 Access?

  • Please visit the "Course Materials" tool in Canvas to view how each material is being delivered. To simplify the delivery process, each course material title has been edited to indicate the delivery method clearly.

Here is what each title indicates:

    • ACCESS CODE FOR ‘COURSE MATERIAL TITLE’

Students will receive an email with an access code, which can also be copied from the Course Materials link in Canvas. Students will use this code to access their materials either through the publisher link added to the professor's course in Canvas or directly on the publisher’s website.

    • CLICK READ NOW TO ACCESS ‘COURSE MATERIAL TITLE

Students will click the “Read Now” button under the title to access the eBook.

    • USE ‘PUBLISHER NAME’ LINK IN CANVAS TO ACCESS YOUR COURSE MATERIAL

Students will access their materials through a publisher link in your course in Canvas. Once the publisher link is added to your course in Canvas and set up, students can access the materials directly through the publisher link without needing to pay or enter an access code.

    • COURSE MATERIAL TITLE' - (PICK UP PHYSICAL COPY IN THE WSU BOOKSTORE OR GO TO https://waynestatebookstore.com/pages/wsu-day-1-access-physical-course-material-shipping-and-in-store-pickup to Ship or Select In-store Pickup).

For courses that include physical materials, students can choose from the following options:

    - Pick up from the bookstore

    - Select shipping (additional charges may apply) or in-store pickup by placing an order for “Warrior Day 1 Access Physical Course Material Shipping and In Store Pickup” on the Wayne State University Bookstore website

    • All other title variations state exactly how students will receive their course materials. I.E. YOUR PROFESSOR WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH THE ACCESS CODE.

What is the link to the student Warrior Day 1 Access FAQ page?

Here is the link.

How do students pay for Warrior Day 1 Access?

The cost of Warrior Day 1 Access is automatically added to students' school billing and pay for it through their student account.

Note: If physical items are shipped, the student will pay the costs directly to the bookstore.

What does “opting out" mean?

If, for any reason, students do not wish to participate in this cost-saving program, then you can opt out by course material. However, students will still need to obtain the required course materials through other means, such as purchasing or renting from the bookstore.

How do students opt out of the Warrior Day 1 Access?

To opt out, students must log into Canvas, go to the course material they wish to opt out of, and select the box “Want to Opt Out” before the 100% refund period ends. Students must repeat this process separately for each course material included in the Warrior Day 1 Access program. Please note: Faculty will not see a "Want to Opt Out" button in Canvas.

Students access to the materials will be disabled soon after the opt-out deadline for your course, and their opt-out credit will be posted to your student account within three to five business days.

Students will be charged for materials if they:

  • drop the class after the 100% refund period
  • do not return physical textbooks to the campus store or postmark shipped returns within the 100% refund period

Do students still need to opt out if I drop a course?

No. If a student dropped a course before the end of the 100% refund period, they will automatically be opted out of the Warrior Day 1 Access program and will not be charged.

Students will be charged for materials if they:

  • drop the class after the 100% refund period
  • do not return physical textbooks to the campus store or postmark shipped returns within the 100% refund period

Can students opt back in if they opted out by mistake?

Yes. Many students choose to opt back in once they hear about the benefits of the program from their professor and other students. To opt back in, students must log into Canvas, go to the course they opted out of, and select the box “Opt In” before the end of the 100% refund date.

How do students access their class materials?

While most digital items are accessible via Canvas, some publishers vary. Physical items can be obtained from the campus bookstore or shipped (additional cost) per request.

Who can I contact for help with accessing my course materials?

  • Students and faculty can contact the WSU Helpdesk for Academica login issues or any technical issues with login, SSO, or Canvas.

  • For problems with accessing your course materials, contact the Bookstore.

How do I resolve eBook or login issues?

Clear your cache. Log directly into your Vitalsource account through the Bookshelf app or website to ensure your LMS and Vitalsource accounts are propertly linked. This typically will fix the looping login and error messages.
